SUICIDE OF INDIGENOUS ADOLESCENTS IN MATO GROSSO DO SUL
Abstract
Suicide is a universal issue, it needs the caution of the whole society, especially when it occurs in special populations, as is the case of indigenous children and adolescents. The reasons that lead a person to suicidal ideation or even to completed suicide can vary, from personal frustration, repeated bullying or even cultural reasons. This self-destruction resides in the desire to die, ending one's own life. An alarming fact is that, every forty seconds, a person takes their own life in the world, thus totaling almost one million deaths by suicide annually. The World Health Organization clarifies the possible causes of suicide among indigenous adolescents, among them, interpersonal conflicts, mental disorders, family problems, substance abuse and social and cultural contexts. It is noticed that, for numerous reasons, suicide is a social problem and should always be pointed out in public agendas. In view of these findings, the present article aimed to describe deaths by suicide among indigenous adolescents in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul. The methodology used was the narrative review, seeking access to physical and virtual collections of periodicals, as well as physical books and e-books on the subject. It is concluded that the causes of suicide among indigenous adolescents are variable and need the attention of governments. This action can also be carried out through public policies for the prevention and monitoring of this population.
