THE IMPACTS OF PANDEMIC COVID-19 ON THE LIFE OF PEOPLE WITH AUTISTIC SPECTRUM DISORDER
Abstract
People with autism, as they suffer from adaptation to changes in neurological development present since birth or early childhood, in the face of a sudden break in their routine, may experience moments of irritability. This fact occurs due to the difficulty caused by the disorder as an obstacle to social interaction, due to limitations in communication, and behavioral changes, such as manias, and restricted interest in specific things, and sensory sensitivity. Through the facts presented, and the authors' experience in professional practice, there was a concern about the impacts that these people would be experiencing. Thus, this article aims to address issues related to the impacts of social isolation in this pandemic caused by the COVID-19 virus. The social detachment determined by the World Health Organization, to contain the advancement of coronavirus, tends to impact exponentially people with Autism Spectrum Disorder. In this context, we sought to research about breaking the routine and its likely effects on the lives of autistic people, and to know how they can behave in the confinement phase. As well as, to suggest to family members the applicability of actions in order to minimize the likely effects of interrupting the autistic routine when using practical activities that lead to understanding and development. Especially because the socialization process, important in the autistic's social relationships and the possible interaction with other people, such as participation in social spaces already destined for development, such as school and therapeutic environments, was compromised.
